Dosimetrists

Dosimetrist, also called Medical Dosimetrist, is a qualified healthcare professional responsible for developing and optimizing treatment plans to enable patients to receive high-quality care through the adequacy of radiotherapy techniques.

The Dosimetrist performs, optimizes and evaluates the dose distribution following the radiation oncologist’s prescription and the international guidelines through very complex and sophisticated computerized planning systems (TPS) based on the images acquired for treatment planning.

This role requires knowledge and skills in different clinical areas such as anatomy, pathology, radiobiology, physics and radiation protection in order to obtain a plan that meets the standards of treating target volumes with the recommended dose and sparing the organs at risk. It also requires a relevant understanding of treatment machines and dosimetry equipment as well as the ability to keep abreast of best practices and new approaches to planning. His tasks may involve plan checking and plan QA as well as equipment quality assurance.
