The San Juan de Dios Hospital in Tenerife lays the first stone of the Comprehensive Oncology and Multi-specialty Clinic building .
This morning, the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Tenerife celebrated the laying of the first stone of its future healthcare building, which will house a Comprehensive Oncology Unit and a Multi-specialty Consultation area. This new space, with a surface area of 1,930 m², represents a decisive step in the expansion and modernisation of the island’s healthcare services, especially in the field of oncological care.
The institutional ceremony began with welcoming remarks by the hospital’s managing director, José Carlos del Castillo, who contextualised the event and underlined the strategic importance of this extension to improve the quality and scope of the healthcare offered by the centre.
The regional director of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God for Andalusia and the Canary Islands, María José Daza, has highlighted the value of the commitment of San Juan de Dios Tenerife “to deepen excellence in patient care, as this cancer centre closes the circle of comprehensive care for these people who are in a highly vulnerable situation and who need the support and confidence that their processes will be guided with the highest level of training, but also with the warmth and accompaniment they need at this time, and which will always be the plus offered by the Hospital Order”. In addition, the managing director underlined the qualitative leap of the hospital thanks to the expansion of outpatient consultations in this new building, which will provide greater comfort to patients and will also allow better access to the wide range of services offered by the San Juan de Dios hospital. The event was also attended by the CEO of the partner company Mercurius Health, Nicolas Ploquin.

The ceremony included a moving commemorative act in which various representatives of the hospital and the community took part in the placing of a time capsule. Symbolic objects reflecting the present and the identity of the centre were placed inside: a statuette of St. John of God, provided by Brother José Cárdenas and Brother José Antonio Soria; the institutional identity charter, introduced by the managing director; and a newspaper of the day, presented by the CEO of Mercurius Health.

A volunteer from the hospital brought in a symbolic pomegranate, the image of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God, the fruit of its history as an international institution founded in the city of Granada almost 500 years ago by Juan Ciudad, who later became St. John of God thanks to his work of hospitality and dedication to the most vulnerable people. This time capsule includes a copy of the latest issue of the institutional magazine of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God Province of Spain, as well as the annual magazine-memorial of the Spanish Cancer Association, introduced by its president; and a compilation of current Google searches on radiotherapy and nuclear medicine, provided by the doctor specialising in radiation oncology who will direct the future unit.
In addition, a nursing coordinator brought in a nursing kit, a geriatric doctor provided a stethoscope, and two users from the social and healthcare area handed over representative objects. The capsule also contains legal tender coins and other significant items.
Once completed, the capsule was deposited in a specially prepared trench at the site where the new building will be constructed.

A comprehensive model of health care.
This new project responds to the growing demand for oncology care in Tenerife and reinforces the commitment of the Hospital San Juan de Dios to person-centred care. The new centre, which will cover 1,930 m², will integrate medical oncology and radiation oncology services, supported by advanced technology in radiodiagnostics and nuclear medicine, which will enable it to offer precise, efficient and humanised care. Among the most outstanding equipment, the centre will have a linear accelerator and a PET-CT scanner, making it the only hospital on the island, outside the public health system, to offer these cutting-edge technologies, which will have an impact on the prompt and accurate diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of cancer patients and will be key to improving clinical outcomes and quality of life.
This will be made possible through a partnership with Mercurius Health, a leading oncology solutions company, which will take over the management of radiation oncology and nuclear medicine services.
The multi-specialty consultation area will also allow for better integration between different medical disciplines, optimising resources and care times. This extension will include consultations in the areas of gynaecology, urology and ophthalmology. In addition, there will be multi-purpose consulting rooms suitably equipped for any speciality.
