Tarragona, June 19, 2025
The new Viamed Tarragona Hospital is preparing to open with a firm commitment to excellence in cancer care. Final preparations are underway for the first Comprehensive Oncology and Radiotherapy Unit in Tarragona’s private healthcare sector. This highly specialized facility will offer modern, comprehensive care to cancer patients.
The unit is designed for a holistic approach to cancer treatment—from diagnosis and therapy to patient support. It features multidisciplinary, integrated, and personalized care, coordinated across different specialties throughout each stage of the treatment pathway. By launching this state-of-the-art unit, Viamed Salud aims to become a key player in regional cancer care.
The hospital will house two specialized cancer care divisions: Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology. Medical Oncology will serve as the cornerstone of patient care and includes an outpatient consultation area adjacent to the Oncology Day Hospital, emphasizing comfort, privacy, and individualized attention.
Outpatient consultations will cover the diagnosis, treatment, and individualized follow-up of patients with neoplastic disease. Additionally, a specialized hereditary cancer consultation will offer genetic mutation testing and genetic counseling when indicated. Second opinion services will also be available for patients seeking confirmation of their diagnosis or more information about their disease. The Medical Oncology team will also focus on cancer analysis and prevention. A central feature of the unit will be a fully equipped Oncology Day Hospital to administer treatments such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or personalized targeted therapies.
In parallel, the Radiation Oncology service will be equipped with cutting-edge technology that allows for highly precise, targeted radiotherapy while minimizing side effects. This treatment modality is essential for many oncological conditions and complements other approaches like chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and surgical oncology. Viamed Salud is partnering with Mercurius Health Group, a European specialist in advanced oncological imaging and therapies, to establish and manage this service.
A Next-Generation Linear Accelerator for State-of-the-Art Radiotherapy
The Radiation Oncology unit occupies 600 m² within the new Viamed Tarragona Hospital. It will feature the latest-generation linear accelerator, the Elekta Versa HD, enabling advanced and precise treatments such as intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), and deep inspiration breath-hold radiotherapy (DIBH). These techniques are critical in treating various cancers, including breast, prostate, colorectal, head and neck cancers.
The Elekta Versa HD stands out for its exceptional precision and speed. It adapts to different tumor types and locations and incorporates sophisticated patient motion management systems, enabling complex treatments in shorter sessions—enhancing both comfort and efficacy. The machine is housed within a radiation bunker located in the hospital’s basement, designed for maximum patient safety. A carefully structured and protocolled treatment pathway ensures a secure and optimal radiotherapy experience.
A Multidisciplinary Team for Comprehensive Cancer Care
The Comprehensive Oncology and Radiotherapy Unit at Viamed Tarragona will be led by a team of highly qualified professionals—both scientifically and empathetically—dedicated to excellence and innovation. Multidisciplinary tumor boards will include specialists in Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Surgery, Nuclear Medicine, Radiology, Pathology, and other key disciplines, enabling coordinated case reviews and treatment planning.
This structure ensures personalized care aimed at improving cure rates and quality of life. With the launch of this unit, patients in the Tarragona region can now receive top-tier cancer treatment and continuous care at Viamed Tarragona, eliminating the need for long-distance travel.
