New Institute of Advanced Radiosurgery to Become the First in Spain to Offer Next-Gen Non-Invasive Stereotactic Radiosurgery Technology

The Institute of Advanced Radiosurgery is launched at Viamed Virgen de la Paloma with the most innovative and unique technology in Spain

  • The Institute is a collaboration between a medical team led by Prof. Kita Sallabanda, renowned neurosurgeon, with technological support of Mercurius Health and Viamed Salud.
  • The Institute of Advanced Radiosurgery incorporates the ZAP-X system, a unique technology in Spain. It is a radiation therapy device delivering stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) treatments for a variety of diseases such as tumours and benign conditions in the brain, head, and neck.

Madrid, 27th August 2021. Mercurius Health, a team of doctors led by Prof. Kita Sallabanda and Viamed Salud collaborate to launch The Institute of Advanced Radiosurgery at Viamed Virgen de la Paloma hospital. The newly created institute specializes in the effective treatment of brain tumours and head and neck cancer, as well as neurological pain of unknown origin, using the most innovative techniques and technology. Each patient will receive personalized treatments where the recovery and quality of life will be central throughout the process.

The Institute of Advanced Radiosurgery, which will be officially presented shortly, will be located at the Viamed Virgen de la Paloma hospital in Madrid and will be the first center in Spain to have a unit of these characteristics. The project will be led by Prof. Kita Sallabanda, renowned neurosurgeon and president of the Spanish Society of Radiosurgery (SER), Associate Professor at the Complutense University of Madrid and Doctor at the Hospital Clínico Universitario San Carlos, and will collaborate with leading doctors and health professionals from prestigious health institutions. Mercurius Health, an international B2B provider of advanced oncology solutions, will be in charge of providing technological support to the Institute for Advanced Radiosurgery.

This institute’s main objective is to offer patients the latest techniques in cancer treatment. In addition, training and research will be two fundamental pillars at the Institute for Advanced Radiosurgery in order to continue developing of the most effective treatments.

ZAP-X®, pioneering technology in Spain

The Institute for Advanced Radiosurgery will utilize the ZAP-X® system, the first one of its kind in Spain. It is a radiation therapy device designed for stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) treatment for a variety of diseases such as tumours and benign conditions in the brain, head, and neck. Unlike other technologies, ZAP-X® minimizes the possibility of unnoticed movements of the target during treatment and delivers a very high precision in treatment without damaging surrounding healthy structures. The clinical applications of this technology are mainly:

  • Primary / metastatic brain tumors.
  • Functional disease (such as trigeminal neuralgia).
  • Vascular disease (such as AVMs).
  • Head and neck.
  • Benign tumors (Neurinomas, Meningiomas and Pituitary Adenomas).

With this project, Viamed Virgen de la Paloma hospital aims to become a leader in the Spanish health sector in cutting-edge technology and with the help of a specialized medical team of recognized national and international prestige in this type of treatment.

About the medical team

Prof. Kita Sallabanda Díaz has more than 25 years of experience in the field of Neurosurgery. Author of Treaty of Radiosurgery (2012) and Guide to Brain Metastasis (2015), he has published in numerous scientific media on the Spanish and world scene. He is the president of the Spanish Society of Radiosurgery and of the Hospital Clínico de Madrid Neuro-Oncology Committee. In the field of teaching, he is an associate professor at the Complutense University of Madrid, a resident tutor at the San Carlos Clinical Hospital in Madrid and is a professor of the International Master’s Degree in Radiosurgery of the Central Nervous System. He and a team of renowned specialists will be in charge of leading the health professionals who will collaborate with the institute.
